Uncertainty in innovation, and how to managed

Uncertainty profiles are developed based on these four types of uncertainties (see Exhibit B for uncertainty profiles encountered in different projects). Having established how the types of uncertainties vary according to the type of the project, management styles change. Managing uncertainty involves two dimensions, planning and learning which require different project infrastructure and different management styles (De Meyer et al.,). The perfect blend of the two can be attributed to the desired project outcome. While planning is associated with variation and foreseen uncertainties, learning is associated with chaos and unforeseen uncertainties.

“You will not win the fight against uncertainty by becoming certain. You will not find your stability by trying to make the unstable, stable. Instead your certainty and stability will come as the result of decidedly embracing uncertainty” – Teal Swan –

Variation

Variation come from many small influences and yields a range of values on a particular activity. By monitoring variations across the board of a project allow us to identify the resulting variations in expense and time.

Foreseen uncertainty

This can’t be identified during project planning. Ther is no plan B, C or D. The team either is unaware of the event’s possibility or considers it unlikely and doesn’t bother creating contingencies. “Unknown unknowns.” or” unk-unks” as they are called, make people uncomfortable because existing decisions tools do not address them.
